Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, during a panel session at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Jan. 18, 2024. Altman was temporarily booted from OpenAI in November in a shock move that laid bare concerns around the governance of the companies behind the most powerful AI systems. In a discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Altman said his ouster was a "microcosm" of the stresses faced by OpenAI and other AI labs internally. "We're already seeing areas where AI has the ability to unlock our understanding ... where humans haven't been able to make that type of progress. Avoiding a 's--- show'Altman wasn't the only top tech executive asked about AI risks at Davos.

Glossier, a direct-to-consumer cosmetics company launched in 2014 by US businesswoman Emily Weiss, pioneered this new aesthetic. At Glossier, beauty marks were celebrated, freckles were lionized and makeup application became as free form as finger painting. Beyoncé, Serena Williams, Michelle Obama and Reese Witherspoon have all been pictured wearing the makeup brand to red carpet events like the Oscars and The Grammys. For Meltzer, the brand fell victim to something that often trips up companies leading the zeitgeist: an evolving landscape. But “Glossy” isn’t just a beauty brand biography — it’s a forensic cross-examination of an era-defining company and how it embodied a moment in wider culture.

My daughter Camille was pregnant, and a routine ultrasound revealed that her baby, a little girl named Lila, was in grave danger. Lila had gastroschisis, meaning that she had a hole in her abdominal wall, and her intestines were developing outside her body. It was shrinking away, and she had only one healthy kidney left. It’d be too much to say she was “healthy.” Her intestines were outside her tiny body. Three generations under one roof.

Lila Werner, second from right, was paid about $5,700 for seven weeks of travel and ice skating in Belgium and Saudi Arabia this winter. But there's a downside to being an international ice skater: Werner says she'll return with very little remaining from her paycheck. Other contracted ice skaters who quit their jobs and performed abroad during the holiday didn't earn much money — but they got to travel essentially for free. "This almost feels like a paid vacation," Werner says. Werner, for example, still paid rent on her one-bedroom apartment while she traveled.
